Fundraising Efforts

From February through early May, the Athena worked hard to raise money for the American Cancer Society. We challenged STARFLEET to raise money. We even sunk so low that we even utilized the resources of the Dominion Kidnapping Service. Others begged at work. We even sold the junk in our closets to make a buck (our April 25 yardsale). In the end, we raised $1550 for the American Cancer Society.

More pictures of the fundraising efforts when there is time to scan them and disk space to store them on the server.

Campsite

For the entire merry month of May, the crew of the Athena was busily working on creating a rather interesting campsite. Karen Donnelly managed to acquire computer monitors from Management Concepts, Inc. and Comsel Corporation/Potomac Republican Woman's Club. She also managed to get boxes and wood that would have been trashed. Crew members brought straws, contact paper, lots of paint, and most importantly, our imaginations and sick minds to create a campsite that won second place at Relay.

We resurrected the Borg ship from First Contact. There were 4 computer consoles created: 2 STARFLEET and 2 half STARFLEET/half Borg (to show assimilation). A communicator archway and two Borg drones (Borgified mannequins Nikkita (a.k.a. Marion) and Elvis) greeted the world to our campsite.

Relay

Now for the pictures... Click on the pictures to see a larger version!!
At night in front of our campsite: Nikkita (in pink nightie and assimilation gear), Blair Learn, Zelda Gray, Ponch Fenwick, Marty Hester Jr, Karen Donnelly, Lisa Paradis, Elvis ("Elvis has left the Collective"), and Mary Hester holding "Hootie" (designation: One of a Kind).
The Nightwear Competition: Mary Hester, Blair Learn, Lisa Paradis, Nikkita, some clown, Marty Hester Jr, Karen Donnelly, Zelda Gray, Ponch Fenwick. We were disqualified because we entered as a team instead of as individuals. That's what happens when a clown is judging.
A trendy prom couple. Blair Learn wearing a pink flamingo "boutiniere" with his date Nikkita, the Borg dressed in assimilation gear and a pink nightie.
The day after... here we are, after a hot day, muggy night, walking around the track and getting no sleep. Maria Hester, Mary Hester Sr, Michael Hester, Mary Hester, Ponch Fenwick, Karen Donnelly, Marty Hester Jr, Zelda Gray, Bryan Laubenthal, Blair Learn, Judy Hoff, Lisa Paradis, and Tom Donnelly.

Filk Songs

Too many paint fumes and late nights while working on the campsite were contributing factors for these gems...

Zelda's Island

Just as Gilligan was the Skipper's first officer, Zelda is Athena's first officer... sung to the tune of Gilligan's Island. Also, Trepak is one of the captain's cats.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
The tale of a mighty ship
And how we once prepared it for
A one-day camping trip

The First Mate worked for Concept Five,
The Skipper worked for Sprint
We called the local papers up,
To get our names in print
To get our names in print

A Borg cube soon attacked the Fleet,
The mighty ship was tossed
If not for the courage of her fearless crew,
Athena would be lost.
Athena would be lost.

The ship set down in the middle of
A local high school field.
WIth Zelda.
And Lisa too.
An Engineer,
And his wife.
The Hester Clan,
And the rest
Are her on Zelda's Island.

The first mate and the skipper too,
Will do their very best,
To make the others comfortable,
In their crash-site landing nest.
No Lights!
No Comms!
No Replimats!
Not a single luxury!
Like Robinson Caruso,
It's primitive as can be.

So join us here each month my friends,
You're sure to get a smile,
From the antics of this wacky crew,
Here on Zelda's Island.

In this week's episode, Tom searches for other ships in nearby sectors by re-routing the remaining sensors through Trepak (yes, it's a cat scan).

Seven

Sung to BINGO.

There was a starship, had a Borg,
And Seven was her name-O
S-E-V-E-N
S-E-V-E-N
S-E-V-E-N
And Seven was her name-O

There was a starship, had a Borg,
And Seven was her name-O
S-E-V-E-*
S-E-V-E-*
S-E-V-E-*
And Seven was her name-O

OK, you get the idea...

Thanks!

Many thanks to the whole team for all their work: Hester Family, Zelda (who became a grandma the day before Relay), Karen and Tom Donnelly, Bryan Laubenthal, Judy Hoff, Carole McCord (our cancer survivor who ran 13 laps in the middle of the day), Blair Learn (who did a lot of traveling between Gaithersburg, MD and Sterling, VA that day), Dennis Bailey (who helped with set design as well), Scott Hanak, Ponch Fenwick, Jazz, and Jay and Lisa.

Also thanks to people who could not make it to the walk, but helped out with the yard sale and work parties: Jeff Carpenter, Gary Hertzog, De Baisch, Brian Elliott, Gloria Scott, and Jennifer Morris.

(apologies to anyone who was accidentally left off the list)
