Athena Policy on Working Conventions
Many Athena members enjoy working at conventions. For many, this is a
way that members can help a convention and the charities that it
supports. Some people choose to work security; others are willing to
do whatever jobs are available including pre-convention footwork,
post-convention cleanup, and anything else that the convention needs.
Regardless of how one works for a convention, there are several ground
rules that we must observe:
- If you regularly work conventions, do not drag others along
just because they have worked with you in the past. Not every person
wants to work every convention. If the person chooses not to work a
convention, that is his or her choice and that choice needs to be
respected.
- One can work at out-of-town conventions provided that
people local to the convention who want to work are NOT forced out.
Please be a "good neighbor."
- When working at a convention, you
are part of a TEAM. Feel free to wear Athena apparel and put some
flyers out on the freebie table, but do NOT push Athena on anyone and
do NOT recruit while on duty. Otherwise, you are causing unnecessary
division in the team. If someone asks about the group, you can talk
to them and meet up with the person when you're not on duty.
- Remember to be on your best behavior. Be polite and helpful. Do
NOT be obnoxious or pushy. Your actions and behavior are a reflection
on Athena, the team, and the convention.
- Regardless of how you have
worked at past conventions, keep in mind that every promoter and every
con is different. Be flexible. Feel free to suggest alternate
solutions to problems from what you have learned in the past, but keep
in mind that they may not take your suggestion.
- ALWAYS follow the
directions of the promoter and the convention staff TO THE LETTER.
Remember, the promoter has the final say in all matters related to his
or her convention.
